Dreamy Dame: Lake Bell

As I was catching up on celebrity news this weekend, I heard that actress/writer/director, Lake Bell just had a baby. Which then reminded me that I wanted to do a Dreamy Dame post on her ever since I saw her film, In a World a few weeks ago (currently on Netflix). Have you seen it yet? It's actually really good. I didn't know much about Lake Bell before this film, though I know she's been around for awhile, and now I am obsessed. She's just really funny and the film was so refreshing. I hope she continues to write and direct. Hollywood needs more women like her. Click below to see her talk about "sexy baby voice." 

Dreamy Dame: Linda McCartney

Out of the many woman I find inspirational, Linda McCartney holds high rank. She was ethereal, stylish, poised, and always looked at ease even though she was married to a Beatle! And I love that she made a name for herself all on her own as a photographer and animal rights activist (and Stella McCartney, her designer daughter, followed suit.) And did you know that she also became a Lady when Sir Paul McCartney was knighted? Sadly, Linda passed away of breast cancer, but her memory lives on. As homage, here are some photos I found beautiful. 

Dreamy Dame: Eva Zeisel

This morning, I was planning to blog about Apartment Therapy's new website design. But as I started playing around over there, you know what happened? I went down the rabbit hole that all you bloggers are familiar with, and I stumbled upon a post about a new modern vintage store, Ampersand Vintage. From there, I went to their own blog and eventually found this post about this amazing artist, Eva Zeisel. Have you heard of her? She was a big deal! And totally Dreamy Dame material: creative, talented, beautiful, and incredibly strong. I wish I had learned about her earlier.

Eva Zeisel was a Hungarian born ceramics artist and industrial designer who passed away last December at age 105. She worked up until she died, and was known for her award winning designs, prolific career, and fascinating life, including a 16 month period where she was imprisoned by the KGB who falsely accused her of plotting to assassinate Stalin. Can you imagine? Her life was very fascinating and inspiring indeed.

Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is one of my all time fave performers. That voice, that hair and those moves! Have you seen them live before? I highly recommend you do if you haven't already. Life changing. Ok, maybe not but they sure make for a FUN night, worthy of capital letters.

Our lovely and super talented friend Celia Rowlson-Hall was recently featured over on the Urban Outfitters blog and she looks absolutely stunning! Celia was the leading lady in the Alexandra Grecco video that Karina directed a few months ago (which you can see here if you haven't already) and if couldn't already tell by that, this is one lady to keep your eye on. Not only does she dance and choreograph, she is also a model (obviously, with those looks!) and a filmmaker herself. Celia's short film Prom Night just debuted at SXSW to wonderful reviews and we can't wait to see what else she has in store. You can see more of Celia's work here.

Dreamy Dame: Sofia Coppola

In anticipation of seeing Somewhere this weekend, today's Dreamy Dame is the lovely Sofia Coppola. As directors and producers ourselves, my sisters and I have been slightly obsessed with Sofia since we first saw Virgin Suicides. She embodies everything we admire in women: style, grace, talent and creativity. Yes, she grew up privileged and yes, making "independent" films are probably not so hard when you're Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, but we don't care! Her films still resonate with us because she's able to tell stories about characters that are relatable, imperfect and fairly honest. With the exception of Marie Antoinette which was more stylized, I really love her minimal approach to just letting a story unfold on it's own. Her directing is refreshing because I often feel like we're just a fly on the wall watching the actors in the film become their characters and letting their story just happen. It doesn't feel planned or over thought.

I believe it just opened, but have any of you seen Somewhere yet? I'm really looking forward to it.

Dreamy Dame: Patti Smith

At the airport the other day, I picked up Patti Smith's Just Kids. My intention was to read it on the flight, but after a crazy weekend with little sleep, I didn't get much done. So now I am about to start it and for a little inspiration, wanted to post about how cool this lady is. She just oozes confidence and style with a carefree spirit. Her beauty is completely unconventional and I think that's one of the many things that make her so attractive.

Have any of you read Just Kids yet? Would love to hear what you think, or tell me what your fave song is. I am mostly familiar with her mainstream stuff and would love suggestions on other gems.

Film: Belle de Jour (1967)

When I first thought of posting about Catherine Deneuve, I wasn't sure if I should write it as a Dreamy Dame post, or focus more on one of her movies. She's beautiful in everything she does, but after refreshing my memory and doing a little research, I decided to write about her most memorable role to me as Séverine Serizy in Belle de Jour.

Directed by Luis Buñuel, the movie is about a wealthy young newlywed, Séverine, who has become bored in her marriage. Although she loves her husband, she wants danger and excitement! So what's a girl to do? Become a prostitute at a brothel, of course. Things are fine and dandy for awhile because she finally feels alive, but as in real life, everything gets pretty complicated when you lead a double life.

As always, Deneuve is incredibly stunning in this provocative role. She has the perfect combination of beauty, mystery and elegance.

Another one of my fave films that she's in? Dancer in the Dark. More on that one in the future.
